Thanks Sandy for hosting although it would have been nice if the power hadn't kept switching off. Call an electrician!!! And next time remember to check your Propane level. Ahem, like someone asked you to...

Thanks to Chef Tahya, Movie-man Sandy and Baseball Mike for another great Tuesday event. Awesome food and friendship. (except for the undercooked burgers)

I swear I paid the electric bill, but it was your toy that caused the power to come and go. Never happen before.

I just thought of a theme for last night. "2 year anniversary at Villagio". It was Sept. 30, 2006 that I signed the docs so that the lovely condo became mine.

Tahya did ask about propane but also agreed that there should be some left because of my low usage. I take full blame.

I will let you know how the burgers taste when they are cooked thoroughly (med. rare to med.). Have to get some propane first.

Thanks to all participants.

undercooked implies that there is a certain "doneness" or standard to be met. but, if "doneness" is the measure, and it is determined by the cook, and the burgers were prepared to the "doneness" the cook intended, then it is impossible that they were undercooked. I will allow that, for you, they were not cooked to the degree you would have preferred, which to the cook would have been "overdone", but you should not conflate two completely separate issues.

and Sandy, don't rope me into shit! mentioning it, then backing away, and only then taking responsibility, is not the same thing as not saying anything at all. You told me that you "hadn't used it that much". what am supposed to say, "well, since you haven't used it that much, you should go get some propane!?." WTF?!!!!! I'll leave it at this, go get some propane. that, you can say I said.

Thanks traynor for hauling over your fryer and bringing apps and the fries. thanks sandy for having it at your house and staying up with me before i drove home. thanks mike for bringing all the great wines and sporting me a cigar. you guys are great! looking forward to "pacific northwest" night

btw, sandy, i have no doubt that you will cook the burgers "thoroughly", but they will not be med-rare. what does thoroughly mean anyway? for all the RAW fish i've seen slip down your gullet in the past 10 years, you don't have any credibility on being the person to define cooked "thoroughly". love ya.

I knew Petrarch would post a verbose diatribe of dribble. Just kidding. Sandy, running out of propane? enough has been said. If plugging in a fryer causes your power to go out, don't blame the fryer, blame the builder. Oh, and since you're condo is 2 stories, you should invest in a rope ladder. Just in case your condo catches fire and you're upstairs, you'll need to climb down out of the window. Done.
You are correct that stating the meat was "undercooked" did imply a certain "doneness" or standard was to be met. And that standard was to be met by the cook. Which, it wasn't. The measure of doness is determined by the cook and any good cook worth his/her salt would know what Rare, Medium Rare, Medium, Medium Well and Well is in relationship to the food he/she is preparing. The burgers WERE prepared to the "doneness" the cook intended and NOT the "doneness" asked for by some of us who asked to have our burgers cooked to a certain "doneness". If the cook wishes to prepare food His/her way with disregard for how the customer wants his/her food cooked, than don't ask the age old question: "How do you want your burger cooked?" Because when that question is asked, than there is a certain degree in which the customer is expecting his/her food to be prepared to their specifications, NOT the cooks. Therefore, it is entirely Possible that the food was "overcooked or undercooked" depending on how the end result varies from the result desired. Ahem.

I didn't ask how you wanted your burgers cooked. Thus, your burgers were not undercooked. They were cooked the amount intended.

I beleive you did ask. But, since we can't agree if you asked or not, we'll just assume we're all right in our own heads. And after all, that's all that really matters, right? I will say though that if (and that's a big IF) you didn't ask us how we wanted our burgers cooked, and you took it upon yourself to cook the burgers the way you wanted than I guess they would have been perfect if all of us happened to like burgers cooked the way you like to cook them. Of course, just because Movie-man Sandy only ate the edges and left the quivering middle to be nuked the next day and I commented that mine was a bit undercooked to my standards even though I still ate it and Baseball Mike played with his burger so long I think I actually left before he finished that probably doesn't reflect much on the doneness of the burgers and more on the inability of us to appreciate true burger greatness. I guess you did a great job cooking the burgers to the level of doneness intended, regardless of how over, under or perfectly cooked the burgers were to those of us besides yourself who were consuming them. In the end I suppose some of us have learned that no matter what's being cooked or by whom, we should take responsibility in making sure we state exactly how we want our food cooked.
